Helen Tooke Butler, collector, family papers, 1819-1963.

Papers of the Tooke (Tuke) family and various relatives include diaries of Isaac P. Richmond, his son, and other family members, who lived in Knoxboro, Oneida County, and nearby, mainly concerning school days, hop growing and other farm work, and the activities of family and friends; accounts, 1897-1909, of Isaac Richmond, a licensed preacher, with the Vernon Center Methodist-Episcopal Society and the Hector Union Society, a recipe and remedy book, 1887, of Mary E. Tooke and announcements concerning her work in kindergarten education; birth, death, and marriage records, 1839-1930, of members of the related Burns, Martin, Meginnis(s), and Tooke families residing in Bouckville, Madison County, and elsewhere; ms. poems, 1890s-ca. 1918, of Walter Barnes Stevenson of Cortland and a typescript copy of his undated essay on the Battle of Saratoga; microfilmed copies of thirty-two letters to Lavinia ("Addie") Bonney, Isaac Richmond, James Tooke, and others from friends and relatives, twenty-eight letters, 1861-1865, from Union soldiers Addison Bonney and Morrison A. Holmes concerning life in an army camp and commenting on the conduct of the war, mainly in Virginia, and six indentures and other legal documents, 1830-1844, of the Burnett and Roberts families and others in Ontario and Monroe Counties; and a photocopy of a letter in Dutch, 1870, from Julle Engelsman of Middlestum, the Netherlands, concerning his family and other matters. Typescript carbon copies of seven letters, 1835-1840, mainly from members of the Burnett family who had moved to Washtenaw County, Michigan, to relatives in Phelps, N.Y., concerning their journey westward, land prices, farming, illnesses, and family affairs and three letters, 1902, 1903, from Sylvanus Burtis, a sanitary inspector in Chicago, mentioning his work and the building boom in that city, recalling his father's position as superintendant of public institutions in New York City in the 1820s and his own early education in Cherry Valley, Geneva, and elsewhere, and giving other biographical information; genealogies of the Tookes, as well as the Abbey, Belton, Fearon, Kern, Marshall, Montague, Needham, and Tackabury families of Madison County and London, Ontario, the Horner and Pattat families of Oswego County, the Coston, Goffe, Griggs, Hale, Skinner, and Stevenson families of Washington County and Sherburne, Chenango County, and the Gifford and King families; two sketches, 1963, written by Mrs. Butler and Arthur J. Tooke concerning the history, 1808-1951, of the Tooke Homestead in the Town of Eaton, Madison County, and the raising, picking, and preparation for market of hops; and photographs, pamphlets, bills, postcards, and clippings concerning the persons and places mentioned above.
